At Soli Organic, providing high-quality, fresh, organic produce is just the start. We're deeply committed to developing innovative solutions that improve the sustainability of how we grow our products too. Learn more about how we're transforming our use of fertilizer in growing organic herbs.
Turning Poultry Waste into a Regenerative Nitrogen Solution According to the #PlanetaryBoundaries framework developed by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Earth’s safe operating space is under increasing pressure. Among the nine critical boundaries identified, biogeochemical flows—specifically nitrogen and phosphorus cycles—have been transgressed more severely than most. Human activity, particularly through industrial agriculture, has massively disrupted the global nitrogen cycle. More reactive nitrogen is now released into the biosphere than our ecosystems can absorb, leading to water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss. At Soli Organic, one of our most transformative initiatives is the use of a #regenerative nitrogen strategy: converting recovered gaseous ammonia from poultry manure digestion into nitrogen fertilizer for our organic herb production. Turning Emissions into Inputs Poultry manure, a byproduct of animal agriculture, releases ammonia gas during decomposition. This emitted gas is captured through a controlled digestion process and turned into a liquid ammoniacal nitrogen fertilizer. Rather than releasing reactive nitrogen into the atmosphere or waterways, it is intercepted - transforming a pollutant into a plant nutrient. The recovered ammonium is then biologically converted into nitrate through nitrification bioreactors, making it the primary nitrogen source for our certified #organic herbs. Regenerative Agriculture This practice goes beyond sustainability. It aligns with the core principles of regenerative agriculture, including: ♻️ Nutrient Cycling: By recovering nitrogen that would otherwise be emitted, we reintroduce nutrients into crop production. This lessens nutrient loss and helps balance our ecological footprint. 🌎 Reduced Environmental Impact: Animal waste nitrogen emissions cause air and water pollution. The ammonia capture system reduces the release of gaseous ammonia and nitrous oxide, both potent greenhouse gases. 🧪 Reduced Dependence on Synthetic Fertilizers: Synthetic nitrogen fertilizers are energy-intensive and often cause ecosystem damage. Using recovered ammonia reduces our reliance on external inputs by utilizing waste-derived nutrients, lowering our carbon footprint. Regenerative, Scalable, and Smart By integrating this biological nitrogen conversion process into our organic farming system, we’re building a scalable solution that bridges innovation and ecological responsibility. This is an example of a regenerative agriculture practice when science, sustainability, and strategy converge. — This is a topic of great interest to me personally and professionally. If you have insights, ideas, or would like to talk more about it, please reach out! Success in agriculture starts with the right partners. At Soli Organic, we rely on high-performance solutions to grow organic herbs using organic fertilizers and growing media. But it's not just about quality and consistency—it's about partnership. Collaborating with industry leaders such as Hort Americas and Berger has been crucial to our R&D efforts. Their deep product knowledge, technical support, and willingness to collaborate allow us to co-develop solutions tailored for maximum yield, performance, and outstanding quality. In R&D, no one wins alone. Success comes from shared expertise, responsive support, and aligned goals—and we’re proud to have found that in these two great partners. Let’s keep growing, together and better. 🌱 #SustainableAg #OrganicFarming #ControlledEnvironmentAgriculture #R&D #Partnerships #Innovation #HortAmericas #Berger #SoliOrganic john santoro, Christopher Higgins, Brian Harris
