Three years ago, after a commercial shoot with NMG Network, we asked the incredibly talented musician and artist Paula Fuga to attend one of our film screenings. She came and just three days later, she called me, inspired. She had an idea for a film and asked if I could help. I said what is it? I expected a music video. She then tells me a story about a Kūkini in the middle of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790. My first reaction? That's not the story I thought you were gonna pitch. The scope, the scale, costumes, props, locations. Yeah, impossible. BUT....maybe, MAYBE we could make it as a short film? I told Paula there’s only one person who could make this happen, Mitchel Merrick. One of the finest filmmakers we have. He edits, directs, and a master VFX artist. We need someone who can do it all. Let’s apply to Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC), and if we get it, we’ll develop it through ʻOhina Labs to buy us time to figure it out. Linda and Robert Nichols and OluKai jumped in to support as we developed it. We leaned into our limitations and turned them into strengths. Enthusiasm for the project opened doors. Cultural masters stepped in to help us tell the story. Brian Keaulana—truly the center of the Hawaiʻi filmmaking universe—connected us with the right people. One by one, the pieces came together. Feather capes and moʻolelo came through Kumu Hulu Nui Rick San Nicolas. Lua training was passed down by Aliʻi Miner. We incorporated lāʻau lapaʻau (healing practices), kākau uhi (tattoos), oli (chant), Ōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), Music, and moʻolelo (stories/legends). We welcomed our advisors on set and adapted and changed things as they saw things play out. It's why our 15 page script turned into a 26 minute film. We listened and continued to build. It was hard. It felt impossible. But somehow, against all odds, we finished the film and it traveled the world, including screenings at the Smithsonian in NYC and DC. We also stand on the shoulders of others. Hoʻomau, created by Kenji Doughty and Yamato Cibulka, helped open the door. Chief of War, the upcoming Apple TV show, further paved the way for stories like this many of the cultural experts and actors from that production contributed to our tiny, willed into existence film. Now, three years from that first conversation with Paula, the film is out in the world. We hope it sparks dialogue, reflection, and many more stories from Hawaiʻi. Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) has championed this project from the very beginning. With the loss of federal funding, their future support for stories like these is in jeopardy. If you value authentic stories from Hawaiʻi, now is the time to show support for PIC and the vital work they make possible. It took a community coming together to make this little film possible. Forever thankful! https://lnkd.in/gFShSBYw
