About us

POWERED BY POSSIBLE The world is more fragile than ever. Food shortages have left millions of people hungry, while violent conflict has sent millions on the run. From poverty and malnutrition to natural disasters and climate change, it’s easy to see a world of insurmountable challenges. Instead, we see an opportunity to create transformative change. We see the world differently. In crisis, we believe in the power of human potential. In struggle, we believe in the ability of communities to grow stronger. So we act differently. We understand that communities are the best agents of their own change and local markets are the best engines of long-term recovery. In more than 40 countries, we partner to put bold solutions into action, helping people triumph over adversity and grow stronger from within. For the refugee who dreams of rebuilding her country, for the mother who wants a healthy future for her children — for millions of people filled with the power of possibility —Mercy Corps connects people to the resources they need to build better, stronger lives. We create transformative change. Mercy Corps has responded to nearly every global emergency over the past 20 years. Since 1979, we have provided $3.7 billion in lifesaving assistance throughout the world. Each year we infuse millions of dollars into local economies through small business loans and grants to provide livelihoods for the world’s most vulnerable people. We are empowering more than 100,000 youth trapped by violent conflict to overcome the profound stress of war and become change makers in their communities. We are powered by the belief that a better world is possible. Join us.

Climate change threatens health worldwide, but communities are building solutions. As world leaders meet for Climate Week and the UN General Assembly, we see how local action creates lasting change. In the Caribbean, neighborhoods are turning community centers into "Resilience Hubs"- spaces with solar power, clean water, and medical storage that help during disasters. Our CEO Tjada D'Oyen McKenna worked with Takeda Pharmaceutical and Professor Debra Jackson to explore how community-led efforts strengthen health systems against climate impacts. The way forward means listening carefully and trusting that communities can lead their own transformation. Together, we can build health systems that help people thrive despite climate challenges. • Meet Abdullah: a baker and entrepreneur in Safiya, #Syria, who’s using renewable energy to serve up delicious flatbreads to his community.🫓 Abdullah has owned his bakery since 2017, but the economic crisis in his country has made it difficult for him to operate his business. Faced with increasing fuel prices, Abdullah turned to a Mercy Corps program that helped him purchase solar panels as a sustainable solution. Now, all of his electrical equipment—including machines, fridges, and freezers—runs on solar power.☀️🕶️ With fuel no longer a concern, Abdullah’s income from the bakery has increased by 25% and his team’s productivity has soared. Still serving flatbreads with kindness and finesse, Abdullah is proving that solar energy isn’t just a tool—it’s a new world of possibility.🔥

  • In the Democratic Republic of Congo, communities already stretched by displacement and conflict now face their 16th Ebola outbreak. 25 lives have been lost, yet within this crisis lies an opportunity for collective action and resilience. "This outbreak comes when communities are already at their limits," shares Rose Tchwenko, our DRC Country Director. "But we've witnessed how swift community engagement and strong coordination can contain spread and save lives." The path forward requires immediate action: protecting frontline health workers, empowering communities with prevention tools, and maintaining the trust that makes response efforts successful. During previous outbreaks, we've seen how communities that feel ownership of prevention measures become powerful partners in containing disease. Our team in Kasai is preparing emergency response efforts, building on established relationships and local knowledge. Even as cuts in international aid compound existing challenges, human potential and community strength remain our greatest assets for overcoming this challenge. Together, we can transform crisis into coordinated action that protects the most vulnerable. Read our full statement 🔗: https://bit.ly/4p8fgKV

  • As #ClimateWeekNYC approaches in two weeks, one thing is clear: the people hit hardest by climate change need to be at the center of how we respond. From failed rains in the Horn of Africa to rising floods in Indonesia and extreme heat in Nepal, the impacts are already here. Climate adaptation isn’t a choice — it’s a necessity. From managing natural resources, growing food through regenerative farming, and turning to clean energy to protect their lives and livelihoods, communities are leading the way. Together with local partners, Mercy Corps is working on the ground and at the global level — shifting finance, innovation, and policy to bring bold climate action. In 2024, our teams reached 11.2 million people through our climate-related work. Yet, we know millions more people are in urgent need of support. Join us to help make a climate-resilient future possible. Tjada David Scott Elizabeth Mercy Corps Ventures Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance Debbie Eliot

  • "This time feels as if it might be the last" - Osama, Gaza City As fighting intensifies in famine-stricken Gaza City, families face their 60th evacuation order in 2025 alone. Our courageous staff continue serving their communities after 23 months of crisis, but like so many other families they also face repeated displacement. And each evacuation becomes harder than the last. "With every displacement, we lose more hope," shares Marah, facing her sixth forced relocation. "There is no place left for people." Preventing famine from spreading and protecting lives requires an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access. Gaza needs a massive surge of aid reaching civilians where they are- not another offensive deepening the crisis. Since October 2023, we've reached over 371,000 people with emergency assistance and provided safe drinking water to over 4,500 displaced families since June. • Today we’re proud to share a story published in The Wall Street Journal about our team’s work to grow peace in Colombia, one farmer at a time. Mayerly is one of those small farmers. Like many others in her region, she supported her family by growing and selling illicit coca leaves. But she lived in fear for her children’s safety. Then, she discovered an alternative: coffee beans. With support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and working alongside local communities in Colombia, Mercy Corps has helped more than 3,200 farmers to uproot coca and shift to legal crops like coffee. Families also receive starter livestock and food to bridge the income gap. Mayerly made the courageous decision to uproot her crops and risk her family’s income. “I did it for my children,” she said. “And for my own peace of mind.” Today she is the proud owner of 12,000 coffee trees on 2.5 hectares of land. She’s helped 160 other families transition from coca cultivation to sustainable coffee farming. Her story shows how courageous personal choices, supported by innovative ideas, the right resources, and strong partnerships, can transform communities.
