As summer draws to a close, it’s a fitting time to highlight the Mariposa Creek Parkway and its role as the setting for the Art + Environmental Education Day Camp, where students explore the connections between nature, culture, and creativity. Developed by the Mariposa County Planning Department in collaboration with community partners, the Parkway is a planning project that transforms a stretch of Mariposa Creek into a linear park and trail. It features native plant gardens, public art, and shaded pathways that reflect the region’s cultural and ecological history. During the Day Camp, local educators guided students through experiential, hands-on activities tied to the Parkway’s natural environment. Weekly themes included watersheds, cultural histories, habitat, and local foods. Students engaged in activities such as: • Building models of the Mariposa Creek watershed • Harvesting indigenous foods and learning traditional plant uses • Hearing stories and legends tied to the land • Weaving baskets using willow stems • Measuring ecosystem health along the creek • Making music inspired by natural sounds • Creating pottery using local clay • Painting with natural dyes sourced from plants The Mariposa Creek Parkway is both a scenic backdrop and an outdoor classroom, providing space for education and activities connected to the local environment. Learn more about the Mariposa Creek Parkway at https://lnkd.in/g8AaASE. --------- Interested in the Art + Environmental Education Day Camp? This is a partnership program of Mariposa County Arts Council and Sierra Foothill Conservancy, who work in concert to fully design and deliver the camp and program is funded by Mariposa County Unified School District and Sierra Foothill Charter School through the Extended Learning Opportunity Program. On June 6–7, 2025, Mariposa Trails Day once again brought our community together to celebrate our local trails, open spaces, and community spirit. Held in conjunction with National Trails Day, the weekend kicked off with a Friday evening meet-up at the Grove House, a local area restaurant in downtown Mariposa, where attendees connected with trail partners and learned about upcoming projects and ways to get involved. Saturday featured a free, family-friendly hike at Stockton Creek Preserve, led by a local docent and supported by dedicated County staff and volunteers. Now in its fourth year, Mariposa Trails Day continues to grow in reach and impact, thanks to the Sierra Foothill Conservancy, County staff, and partners including the Upper Merced River Watershed Council, Mariposa Trails, Rotary Club, and the Mariposa Health & Wellness Coalition. Together, these efforts reflect a strong and lasting commitment to protecting and enjoying the landscapes that make Mariposa County special. County Government Month: Celebrating the People Who Keep Mariposa Running County government touches nearly every part of daily life—from the roads we drive to the parks we enjoy, the first responders who protect us, and the services that support families and seniors. In Mariposa County, local government is built on the belief that public service matters—and that every resident deserves reliable, responsive support close to home. In recognition of the vital role counties play across the country, the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed April 2025 as County Government Month, joining thousands of counties in celebrating the people, programs, and partnerships that keep our communities strong. Read the proclamation here: https://lnkd.in/gQSN-UBb As the resolution states, counties fulfill a vast range of responsibilities—administering justice, providing public health services, managing roads, solid waste, elections, parks, records, and more. These services aren’t just essential—they’re part of everyday life in a place that’s proudly rural, deeply rooted, and committed to community. That commitment is reflected in the everyday work of County departments. Across more than a dozen service areas, Mariposa County employees are hard at work delivering essential programs and services, often behind the scenes but always with purpose: - The library connects residents to books and lifelong learning - Public Works crews maintain critical infrastructure - Sheriff's Office deputies work to protect and serve the public - Planning, Building, and Environmental Health guide safe development - The Clerk’s Office ensures access to records and transparent elections Mariposa’s story is unique. Once known as the “Mother of Counties,” we were originally one-fifth of the state and later gave rise to 11 other California counties. Today, we continue to play a big role, serving as the gateway to Yosemite National Park, welcoming millions of visitors each year while maintaining our small-town character, strong public institutions, and local pride. As the proclamation reminds us, counties serve as intergovernmental partners, enacting local, state, and federal programs to protect and enhance the health, welfare, and safety of all residents. That’s a responsibility Mariposa County takes seriously—every month of the year. Mariposa County is proud to share Wakaalətti’: Our Creek – Restoring Land, Healing Community, a short film highlighting the restoration of the Mariposa Creek Parkway. Check out the film on YouTube at https://lnkd.in/gKRKvqqE The Mariposa Creek Parkway is a planned multi-use trail and conservation corridor that runs through the town of Mariposa, connecting natural, cultural, and civic spaces along Mariposa Creek. This short film showcases how native habitat restoration, made possible through strong community partnerships, can build ecological resilience and wildfire preparedness. The documentary, directed by Amanda Law of Lovely Films, was filmed over two years and captures the seasonal changes and collaborative efforts involved in the restoration project. It features interviews with key partners and highlights the cultural and environmental significance of the Parkway. Congratulations to the Mariposa County Planning Department for your continued work on the Parkway and to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life. Mariposa County is taking meaningful steps to support housing solutions for our residents. One of our latest efforts is the launch of our ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) Plans Gallery, a curated collection of building designs that have been pre-approved for building code compliance—helping streamline the development process for homeowners and reduce upfront design costs, created by the Community Planning Collaborative. Thanks to the coordinated work of our Planning department, the gallery includes a variety of pre-approved ADU designs and was recently expanded to include six additional plan sets provided by the County of San Diego, which are available for public use and can be downloaded at no cost. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to making housing more accessible in Mariposa County, while maintaining high standards for safety, design, and site-specific planning. Although every project still requires local permitting, the gallery removes a major hurdle for residents getting started. Explore the gallery here: https://lnkd.in/gpjtqeBg We're also working with architects and designers to continue growing this resource. Professionals interested in submitting plans for pre-approval and inclusion in the gallery are encouraged to contact the Planning Department at 209-966-5151. We're proud of the thoughtful, resident-focused work our team is delivering. #HousingSolutions #Housing #LocalGovernment #PlanningAndDevelopment #ADU #AffordableHousing #CommunityDevelopment #PrefabHomes #PreApprovedPlans #ModularDesign
