About us

Mackey Mitchell Architects partners with colleges, universities, and communities to create places that support belonging, wellbeing, and learning. Our studios in St. Louis, Dallas, and Asheville serve clients nationwide. We listen first, co-create with stakeholders, test ideas with users, and deliver with care long after opening. We focus on higher education, student housing, learning environments, and civic projects. Success is measured by outcomes such as student connection, effective operations, and resilient buildings that serve for decades. Research informs our decisions; we share what we learn through post occupancy reviews and continuous improvement. Collaboration with campus leaders, peer firms, and specialty consultants is central to our approach. Services include planning and visioning, programming, architecture and interiors, stakeholder engagement, sustainability and LEED, and post-occupancy evaluation.

  • The Missouri University of Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility, known as the Missouri Protoplex, continues to take shape as a hub for advanced research, innovation, and industry partnerships.   On the exterior, the distinctive curved metal panel façade is being installed, giving the facility its bold, modern identity. Visible from I-44, the building is quickly becoming a landmark and an anchor to the future growth of the research campus. Inside, the dramatic two-story lobby stair structure has been installed, offering both a functional connection and a striking architectural centerpiece. The building of systems and lab infrastructure is progressing, moving the Missouri Protoplex closer to its role as a hub for cutting-edge research, flexible teaching and learning spaces, and collaboration with industry partners. This progress reflects the dedication of an outstanding project team. In addition to Missouri S&T and the design-build leadership of PARIC Corporation, the design team includes Perkins&Will, McClure Engineering-St. Louis (MEP), KPFF Consulting Engineers, Antella Engineering, David Mason + Associates (DMA), SWT Design and Shen Milsom & Wilke (SM&W). Together, this team is helping bring Missouri S&T’s vision to life: a facility that will shape the future of advanced manufacturing in Missouri and beyond. The Missouri Protoplex is scheduled to open in 2025.

  • I am an architect who believes design shapes more than buildings. It shapes communities. I am proud to call St. Louis my home and headquarters. For over five decades, I have collaborated with universities, civic organizations, and local communities to create spaces that promote connection, wellness, and belonging, both locally and nationally. I am a collaborator, listener, and problem solver committed to carrying forward the legacy of service started by Gene Mackey and shared by our entire team today. I am Mackey Mitchell Architects. I am St. Louis. Our thanks to the Missouri Historical Society for leading this effort to highlight what makes St. Louis extraordinary. We’re honored to be part of that story. #IamStLouis

  • There’s magic in transformation. At Mackey Mitchell Architects, customization means more than design flair. It means listening deeply to a community’s needs, history, and aspirations. Visitation Academy’s Middle School renovation reflects this approach. What once was dormitory space will be a dynamic learning environment — 14,000 square feet reimagined with nine classrooms, flexible gathering areas, locker bays, and bright corridors overlooking the courtyard. Part of this transformation is a new mural that will bring heritage to life inside the renovated commons space. Across the mural are the words of St. Francis de Sales: “Be who you are and be that well.” For generations, this phrase has captured the spirit of Visitation, reminding students to embrace their unique gifts with gentleness, humility, simplicity, and charity. This work shows how Visitation honors its past while boldly investing in the future. We see in this project a school that not only values its heritage but also embraces the future. Our team was honored to partner closely with leadership, including Head of School David Colon and Middle School Principal Angie Jung, as well as with the many collaborators who shared our vision of a space that feels both familiar and forward-looking. • Big things are on the horizon at Tennessee Technological University! The upcoming J.J. Oakley Innovation Center and Residence Hall is designed to enrich the student experience, offering first-year students a supportive place to live, learn, and belong. With 402 beds in semi-suite and pod-style layouts, plus community spaces like lounges, a kitchen, a music room, and quiet areas, the hall fosters connection and well-being. At the heart of the project is an Innovation Center, where students will gain hands-on experience with tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers. These technologies will allow them to create models, prototypes, and custom parts, connecting classroom learning with the same advanced tools used in manufacturing, design, and engineering industries. This space brings Tennessee Tech’s commitment to applied learning to life. Set to open in Fall 2027, this exciting project was designed in partnership with WBA Architecture and reflects the university’s dedication to student success, creativity, and innovation. • Colorado State University’s Allison Hall is on its way to a bold transformation! This week,  team members Matthew Roeder, Shelby Barker, NCIDQ, IIDA, and Francisco Miranda Garcia joined partners Scott Metz (Clark & Enersen) and colleagues from Adolfson & Peterson Construction to see progress on the renovation. Renovating a historic residence hall brings both challenges and opportunities. Every step of demolition matters, since uncovering the unexpected is part of the process. Current work includes hazardous material abatement, demolition, structural improvements, and site/utility upgrades—laying the foundation for what’s ahead. The project doesn’t stop at renewal. Allison Hall is also undergoing a vertical expansion, creating new capacity while preserving the hall’s legacy. Slated to reopen in 2027, the revitalized hall will provide modern, connected spaces for generations of CSU students. Learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/g4mH_cFw

  • This week, the 2025 APA Bi-State Conference in St. Louis brought together planning professionals from across the Midwest to exchange ideas and explore how thoughtful planning can shape the future of our communities. One highlight was a tour of The Delmar Loop, led by Jake Banton (Mackey Mitchell Architects), Samantha Lee Smugala (EAST LOOP COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT), and James Fister, AICP (City of St. Louis). The tour traced the history and progress of transit-oriented development in the district and celebrated the partnerships that have made the Loop one of the American Planning Association’s 10 Great Streets in America. At its core, transit-oriented development is about people, making it easier to get around, supporting local businesses, and creating neighborhoods where connection and community can thrive. For Mackey Mitchell, these conversations matter because architecture and planning go hand in hand. Our work is strongest when it supports walkable, connected, people-focused places—exactly what transit-oriented development is all about.
