#DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth Lucy came to the U.S. with one goal: to create a better future for her daughter, who stayed behind in Thailand while Lucy pursued a nursing degree. Not long after arriving, she fell in love and got married. At first, life seemed full of promise. But when Lucy decided to return to school, everything changed. Her husband became controlling and violent, determined to take away her independence. Afraid for her safety, and terrified she might never see her daughter again, Lucy turned to LAFLA for help. With LAFLA’s support, Lucy secured permanent residency, which allowed her to gain protection from her abuser without relying on him for legal status. She was finally free to reclaim her life and continue her education safely. Every year, LAFLA’s clinics assist over 500 survivors like Lucy, helping them obtain protection from their abusers and empowering them to build a better life for themselves and their families. ➡️ Research has proven that homelessness is often one health or income shock away... ✨ But income support programs are showing great promise in helping vulnerable individuals and families achieve stability and wellbeing. ✨Alongside our amazing partners at United Way of Greater Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles Housing Department, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and the @housingrightscenter -- we've been thrilled to support the launch of the United to House LA Income Support Program. ✨ The program provides cash assistance to eligible households at risk of homelessness, focusing on seniors and people with disabilities. Using a unique approach to alleviating financial stress and preventing displacement, the ULA program will provide crucial insight into how larger, one-time payments can help stabilize housing and support increased stability and well-being for vulnerable individuals and families. Nicole always planned to go to college and build a career that would allow her to repay her student loans. But when her autoimmune condition made it impossible to keep steady work, Nicole was suddenly facing $68,000 in student debt she could no longer repay. When Nicole turned to LAFLA for help, attorney Robyn Smith jumped to enroll her in a debt relief program for people with disabilities. But months passed with no response. Finally, the Department of Education told Nicole she'd have to start the process all over again. Nicole’s story isn’t unique. Thousands of disabled borrowers are eligible for student loan relief but remain trapped in bureaucratic limbo, struggling to access the help they were promised. LAFLA is fighting for our clients—and for change. Learn more in MarketWatch: https://lnkd.in/gRsDbdqF
