About us
The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) coordinates organizations that serve the homeless on Long Island. LICH facilitates the region's funding application to the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) for the provision of housing and services for the homeless. LICH also coordinates the Continuum of Care group on Long Island, a planning and decision-making entity composed of non-profit organizations, government representatives, and community members. LICH advocates on behalf of the homeless via community outreach, media outlets, and legislative advocacy. Additionally, we distribute essential items to the homeless and work with homeless individuals to help them obtain permanent housing. Reworld Waste was honored to sponsor the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless’ Backpack Pirates Camp Day, a special event dedicated to bringing joy and support to children in need. The event offered a one-day camp experience packed with fun — including face painting, archery, sports, a swim in the Long Island Sound, and many other exciting pirate-themed activities. We provided food for the entire day, serving over 300 attendees, and had 15 amazing Reworld volunteers on-site to help cook and serve meals. 💚 One of the most meaningful parts of the day was a boutique-style shopping experience, where each child had the chance to pick out new clothes, sneakers, and a backpack filled with school supplies — helping them return to school feeling confident and prepared. We’re proud to give back and support our local communities alongside incredible organizations like the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. #CommunityImpact #ReworldCares #Volunteerism #CorporateSocialResponsibility #BackpackPirates #GivingBack #LIHomelessCoalition #TeamReworld #MakingADifference #BackToSchool

On a hazy, humid August morning, two nurses from our Street Medicine team greet their first patient — Virginia. Virginia needed follow-up care after suffering a stroke only months earlier in Florida, before driving back to New York. Unable to secure a place to stay with family and unwilling to part with her pets, Virginia chose instead to sleep in her car. “I originally thought I was going to die here in this car," said Virginia. "There was no hope. Meeting people who care is great. I need to see a real neurologist — and now they’re going to set me up with an appointment.” “All of our patients come through the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, which canvasses the region and identifies people with health care needs,” said Mary Mahoney, NP, vice president of Emergency Management and Clinical Preparedness at Northwell and the lead clinician for the Street Medicine program. “We go wherever the need is." 🔗 https://bit.ly/4lG1hsV

Insightful Newsday Media Group article on our Street Medicine program showing the impact of our work over the last year with Northwell Health and our Long Island Coalition for the Homeless team, led by Dylan Schwarz. A huge thanks to Debbie Salas-Lopez, MD, MPH, FACP for her advocacy and commitment to providing healthcare to people living unsheltered on Long Island, and to the incredible volunteers at Northwell Health and Molloy University for their dedication to the most vulnerable members of our communities. "We do a lot of survival work with folks on the street, but our ultimate goal is helping them get into permanent housing” - Greta Guarton, LMSW, executive director and CEO of Long Island Coalition for the Homeless "Working with the Coalition helped us understand how important it is to approach people with respect and dignity and not make assumptions of what they need” - Debbie Salas-Lopez, MD, MPH, FACP, executive vice president for Northwell’s Institute for Community Health and Wellness https://lnkd.in/efcU6XJh

In a guest essay published today in Newsday, Long Island Coalition for the Homeless Executive Director, Greta Guarton, LMSW, writes about the impact of the recently passed federal budget, as well as the devastating effects cutting HUD funding will have on Long Island: "Nearly half a million voucher recipients statewide, 100,000 subsidized Section 8 units, and 164,000 public housing tenants could be stripped of the support they depend on to remain safely and stably housed. That means mass evictions, a destabilized housing market and a rollback of crucial systems that have helped end the cycle of homelessness here on Long Island." - Greta Guarton Read more in Newsday Media Group: https://lnkd.in/ewYMjF7Q
