Overtime CEO Dan Porter on This is Working podcast: "Even if you're not in the idea business because you've outsourced your brain to AI or something else like that, you can be in the business of pushing whatever that brain is to keep thinking, keep refining," he said. "Because anything that you get on first blush, probably a million people have." https://lnkd.in/e58nhVQu

When we started Overtime, most coverage of high school athletes was about rankings, stars and commitments. It was when we cut through the noise and started talking about the person and the story rather than the numbers, that our audience really grew. Every athlete who plays sports has a story. And that story becomes part of their identity and their growth path going forward. And it has nothing to do with if they ever play at a professional level. It’s about teamwork, competition and all the good stuff that comes with playing sports. There are eight million high school athletes in the U.S., and only about 500,000 college roster spots which means most people’s sports journey ends at high school. That’s why I’m supporting IMG Academy’s #AddMoreAthletes campaign. Not every young person is going to make it to a Power Five school or sign a million-dollar NIL deal, but every one of them has a story and an experience that helped them grow.. And now, they’re being squeezed out by a perfect storm: roster caps, extended NCAA eligibility, and the transfer portal turning college recruiting into a college-to-college shuffle. I am not against all the changes in college sports. Change and growth are fair and inevitable. But in the process I hope we can keep options open for all the non revenue sports as well. So that many of the high school athletes who will never dunk in a final four or score in a CFB game, still get to compete. Education has always been a core value in my life. Both of my parents were college professors, and I teach outside of Overtime too. And to me, sports is education. It’s where kids learn discipline, resilience, teamwork, leadership - lessons that stick long after the final buzzer. That’s the philosophy behind our basketball league, Overtime Elite, too. It’s not just about developing elite athletes, but trying to prepare them for life on and off the court and beyond. When we talk about “the future of college athletics,” we’re not just talking about the top 2.5%, but the entire next generation. And that deserves a spot on the roster.
