This weekend, we lost a colossus in our community: Tad Taube, whose vision and generosity have transformed the Jewish community and numerous institutions across the Bay Area and around the world. The staff and Board of the Oshman Family JCC deeply mourn his loss. May his memory be a blessing and a comfort to his wife and family, and to our colleagues at Taube Philanthropies. The Oshman Family JCC itself might not exist without the Taube family’s support and advocacy, which has helped tens of thousands of people to learn about their Jewish heritage, celebrate Jewish and Israeli culture, travel to Israel and Eastern Europe, attend Z3 conferences, and connect to the Jewish community. Marking 600 Days Today marks 600 days since the horrific attacks of October 7, 2023. Fifty-eight hostages remain held in captivity by Hamas terrorists, while countless others suffer from the ongoing state of war. Each new day overwhelms us with more news: sometimes hopeful, but too often dismaying. We hear in one moment that a new hostage release deal may be imminent and that humanitarian aid is flowing, and in the next that the prospect of a resolution is remote and that the path forward is dim. We swing from relief to despair and back again. Yet our pain cannot compare to that of the hostages and their families. So, we hold in our hearts the hostages and their families, who each day experience fear and uncertainty. We pray for the soldiers, who risk their own lives to free the hostages. And we remember those who have died protecting and defending Israel. We think of all those, Israeli and Palestinian alike, who are suffering, and we pray that the coming days may bring us better news that all the hostages are able to return home, that the conflict is at an end, and that all those affected by the war are able to resume a life of safety, peace, and comfort. Oshman Family JCC reposted this
Sometimes we have to keep saying the same thing over and over again. So I’m pleased JTA, J Post and TOI picked it up because we should all be proud to call ourselves Zionists.
