  • December brought us one more reason to celebrate! 🎉 Martin Špendl and Pavlin Poličar from our team at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science received a faculty award for their postgraduate research “Automated Assignment Grading with Large Language Models: Insights from a Bioinformatics Course.” 🙌 👀 Their study shows that, when supported by well-designed prompts, LLMs can achieve grading accuracy and feedback quality comparable to those of human graders. Providing personalised feedback in courses with a large number of students can be challenging due to time and staffing constraints, but recent advances in natural language processing and LLMs bring an opportunity to support this process more efficiently. ✅ Students appreciate and benefit from detailed and more timely feedback, while instructors can dedicate more time to face-to-face consultations, course design, and individualised support. 🔝 Martin and Pavlin presented their work at the world's largest bioinformatics and computational biology conference ISMB/ECCB 2025 🧬 🌍 You can read the full paper here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dYRmR3QH. Congratulations!! 💯 #AI #machinelearning #datascience #bioinformatics #education #innovation #LLM ISCB - International Society for Computational Biology

Did you know that, within the scope of #DALI4US, more than 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ primary school teachers are currently introducing data exploration and #AIliteracy, with an emphasis on critical thinking, to their classrooms in Ireland, Luxembourg, and Slovenia? 💜 🔝 We recently met in Ljubljana, where we discussed the large-scale experimentation with the innovative #dataliteracy approach in the 3 European countries involved in the project 🇮🇪🇱🇺🇸🇮 . In Ljubljana, we shared and compared 🪁 the insights from the piloting, including national particularities related to the different contexts, 🪁 teachers’ needs and attitudes, 🪁 the creation of an international community of good practice, as well as 🪁 the different levels of awareness and support from national policymakers. We discussed the best ways to 🧩 consolidate and further align the teaching materials, tools, and resources, 🧩 ensure the long-term sustainability of the developed tools and resources, and 🧩 present the project findings and achievements to the relevant stakeholders. Next step: an international meeting with the teachers! 😊 #education #EU #innovation #AI #dataanalytics University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science H2 Learning Ministrstvo za vzgojo in izobraževanje Revelo.ai Dublin West Education Centre

  • 🍊🇪🇺 Orange is innovating #AI and #dataliteracy education in European primary schools! Orange-based classroom activities for kids are currently being piloted in more than 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ primary schools around Europe! 🇮🇪 🇱🇺 🇸🇮 Ana Farič from our team at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, recently presented our innovative approach to teaching data literacy with Orange at the Knowledge Network Conference in Slovenia to over 7️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ participants from the fields of #education, digitalisation, and open science. 🙌 She gave a talk "What Can Gnomes and Candies Teach Us About AI❓" 🧙 🍬 The title is connected to two learning scenarios developed within the DALI4US project that help teachers enrich their lessons with AI topics. This year, four of these activities are being tested in a large-scale experimentation by teachers in Ireland, Luxembourg, and Slovenia. 🔝 Together with their upper primary level students, teachers in each of the 3 countries are exploring 🟠 recommender systems, 🟠 clustering, 🟠 predictive models, and 🟠 reinforcement learning in a fun and playful way using gnomes, cartoons, climographs, and games. You can find the four activities with the accompanying learning materials here ➡️ https://gairdin.eu/ Ana's talk and other presentations at the conference ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ej_xrdXy. 🐾 🧡 In Slovenia, the development and testing of machine learning and data exploration activities for kids, both using Orange or through unplugged activities, is part of a broader initiative called Pumice (Teaching with a Pinch of AI), led by Janez Demšar from our team. #innovation #EU #dataanalytics

Process Data Mining without Coding Field instrument data—whether from manufacturing sensors or environmental monitors—drives essential decisions, yet it often arrives raw, noisy, and inconsistent. Noise, gaps, and irregularities can make this data difficult to interpret without proper cleaning and preparation. For users without coding experience, Orange Data Mining offers a practical and beginner-friendly solution. This open-source data mining tool provides an intuitive drag-and-drop interface for building visual workflows that clean, visualize, and analyze time-series data such as pressure or flow measurements. By transforming messy datasets into clear, actionable insights, Orange makes data preparation both accessible and efficient.

Thanks to LINXS Institute of advanced Neutron and X-ray Science and Milda Pucetaite for organizing this workshop! We hope the participants enjoyed it as much as we did. We are very happy to "stand on the shoulder" of Orange Data Mining and produce Quasar (https://quasar.codes) for the natural sciences folks.

We spoke to Ferenc Borondics and Stuart Read, two of the people behind the open-source Quasar project aimed at data analysis with the help of modern machine learning. They recently visited LINXS to host a workshop to teach early career researchers how to visualize and process data, build visual workflows, and apply multivariate and machine learning methods to spectroscopy and microscopy datasets. – Our goal with Quasar is that users develop an understanding of their whole system; not just solving a very specific technical problem. That is why we have put a lot of work into making a tool that will be suitable to solve general questions, but can also support specific needs, says Ferenc Borondics. – It is always great to see how fast people pick up the ideas on the ways data processing happens in Quasar. While it is a steep learning curve, we usually see a large jump in people’s understanding and ability to use the tools by day two or three of a workshop, says Stuart Read. • Orange friends! We recently met with our partners in the ARISA - AI Skills project in Milano 🇮🇹, where we discussed our new #AI courses that we designed for companies – in the past 6 months, we piloted two of them at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science in Slovenia. 🇸🇮 The responses have been fantastic. After completing the course for decision-makers in companies, some of the participants commented: 🍊"These basics really should be part of a general #education, not just for decision-makers in companies. At the very least, every high school student should know at least this much. Congratulations!"   🍊"An exceptionally interesting and clear delivery of knowledge."   🍊"I expected the training to be mostly theoretical and was concerned about hidden marketing, but with its interactivity, concrete examples, encouragement of discussion, and openness of the instructors, it far exceeded my expectations."   🍊"Today everyone talks about AI, but they don’t know enough about the background."   In two days, we're hosting the official ceremony where the participants of the AI Fundamentals for Decision Makers course from 9️⃣ different companies will be awarded microcredentials by the University of Ljubljana for having successfully completed the course. 🙌 The course was designed and delivered by the excellent Blaz Zupan and Ajda Pretnar Žagar from our team. It was organised in collaboration with Gospodarska zbornica Slovenije. We can't wait for the next editions of #Orangeforbusiness! 🍊 👔 #machinelearning #dataanalytics #eu #innovation #ailiteracy
