Struggling to make ends meet, staying with her brother and sharing a room with her young daughter, Army veteran Donetta Ward found Operation Homefront at the right time. Our Transitional Home (Apartments) program has defrayed more than $400,000 in rent and utility costs. Donetta is now one of the many families that thrive within the program, which allows them to increase their knowledge of personal finance, pay down debt, and save money to gain stability for her and her daughter. Sometimes support looks like a car packed to the brim with backpacks and crayons. Other times, it’s showing up with a housewarming gift and words of encouragement from someone who’s been there before. 🤗 That’s precisely what our friends at Airgas did this year. From filling school supply drives in Pennsylvania to helping us welcome the Graham family into the very first Transitional Home for Veterans in Oklahoma, they demonstrate their heart for military families throughout the year in numerous ways. Our program is designed to ease the burden of rising costs and challenges military families face by giving away free school supplies, including backpacks, to military children. We help ensure they start the new school year on the right foot and that our military families feel supported through any moment of life. Recently, we assisted many military families in Tampa, FL. Marine Corps veteran Brandon Baker faced a tough transition to civilian life. After a medical retirement and the loss of his family’s only vehicle, he and his wife Sophie had been working hard to provide stability for their two young sons. Now, thanks to the generosity of U.S. Bank and Operation Homefront, that stability is within reach. Through the Driven to Serve program, U.S. Bank recently donated a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta to Brandon’s family—marking the 35th vehicle donation in partnership with Operation Homefront and the 95th overall. Together, we’re helping military families like Brandon’s overcome challenges and move toward a brighter future. From enlisting, to assignment and deployment, to meeting her husband, and eventually having to retire due to health issues, Mara Bertheir, a Navy veteran, has been through it all. Seeking stability for her and her growing family, she found Operation Homefront’s Transitional Housing—Villages. This program provides fully furnished apartments for wounded, ill, and injured service members with families to live rent-free while they go through the process of medically separating from the military. As we make our way through Texas, we stopped in Houston and hosted a Back-to-School Brigade® in the Ellington JRB community. We were welcomed by many smiling faces that lit up our day. 😀 We distributed FREE backpacks and school supplies kits to many military families! Special thanks to Academy Sports + Outdoors for packing up those supply kits and donating the materials inside. Aside from the school supplies, military children were able to participate in fun activities like rock painting and clipboard decorating. 🤓 Our Back-to-School Brigade® program is still chugging along! Earlier this month, we hit Aurora, CO, and Bremerton, WA, to distribute FREE school supplies to many deserving military families and children. With the help of our compassionate and hardworking volunteers and field team, we served over 400 students. They work tirelessly to bring these events to life, ensuring they run efficiently and all attendees have a great time. Two months. That’s how long it took for the Wolfle family’s dream of stability to be washed away.⛈️ After 11 years of service, Air Force Tech. Sgt. Michael Wolfle and his wife, Brittany, finally settled into their new home in Port Orange, FL, ready to start their civilian chapter with their two teens. But back-to-back hurricanes brought devastating flooding, destroying cherished furniture, floors, and the sense of peace they’d worked so hard for. With savings drained and insurance not covering the damage, the Wolfles faced an impossible choice: repair their home or pay the mortgage. That’s when Michael’s recovery care specialist connected him with Operation Homefront’s Critical Financial Assistance Program®. Thanks to our incredible partners—Wounded Warrior Project, The Home Depot Foundation, CSX and Love's Travel Stops—we covered their mortgage and replaced flooring, bringing some much-needed relief. “That call was huge,” Michael said. “Everything from October until Christmas felt like it was going wrong, and Operation Homefront lifted a lot of stress off all of us. That call tipped the scales back to good luck, and I’ve been able to focus on my health.” Now, with their home restored, Brittany has completed her anthropology degree, and Michael, MBA in hand, is preparing for a civilian career focused on helping others, just as he has his entire life.
