Open-Xchange has submitted its response to the European Commission’s consultation on European open digital ecosystems. The information collected will underpin the European Open Digital Ecosystem Strategy. In our response, we highlighted: ➡️ The open-source paradigm naturally aligns with Europe's objectives of digital autonomy. ➡️ An open digital ecosystem strategy should start from a clear objective: Europe should become the global leader in open digital technologies. ➡️ Europe's digital strategy should adopt the internet's open architecture as a reference, requiring modularity and interoperability and adopting open protocols and formats; Public code should be released under open licenses. ➡️ The strategy should be based on two pillars – the first one should be a "buy European, buy open" industrial policy; The second is a public investment fund for European sovereign technologies of various kinds, from foundational blocks to long-term moonshots. ➡️ While all stack levels need to be addressed, sectors with a large economic impact should be prioritised. Among our fields of expertise, messaging and productivity applications seem the most urgent. ➡️ When defining "European open source" for purposes of digital sovereignty, requirements should not focus on the origin of the code or nationality of the authors, but should be imposed on suppliers, following the model of the Cyber Resilience Act. Yesterday, Open-Xchange’s Frank Hoberg joined senior representatives from a range of German open source and cloud technology companies (CONVOTIS, IONOS, Nextcloud, and SUSE) for a discussion around the ‘German stack’, digital sovereignty and the strategic expansion of open source solutions ‘Made in Europe’. What became clear through the discussions is the need for us to highlight what we’re doing (and successes) and existing capabilities more proactively, as well as encouraging key stakeholders to make decisions in favor of real digital sovereignty, as Dirk Schrödter did in Schleswig-Holstein. They also discussed removing inertia and the need for courage within the sector to make the necessary changes and move towards open-source-based solutions that are digitally sovereign - like those from Open-Xchange, Univention, and Nextcloud, or #openDesk from Zentrum Digitale Souveränität (ZenDiS). #OpenXchange #digitalsovereignty #opensource

I’m excited to share that I’m stepping up my contribution to M3AAWG (The Messaging, Malware, and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group) in 2026 by taking on the role of Co-Chair of the User & Endpoint Committee, one of M3AAWG’s four priority focus areas (https://lnkd.in/eTnKtzrm). 🤔 This work matters because the edge is where abuse ultimately lands—impacting users, exploiting trust, and challenging the resilience of the mail ecosystem.
