What's the fastest way to understand why unaccompanied kids need lawyers? Ask your child these 11 questions: 1) Do you acknowledge receipt of the notice to appear dated __/__/__? 2) Is your name ______? 3) Is that spelling on the document in front of you correct? 4) How do you plead to the allegations and the notice to appear? 5) What country are you from? 6) What country do you want to live in? 7) Can you tell us why? 8) And why do you want to leave the country that you can from? 9) What defense to deportation are you seeking? 10) Would you like to designate a country for removal? 11) What is it? Children who come to the US alone seeking safety for reasons beyond their control are not attorneys. They are babies and toddlers, many of whom are fleeing violence, abuse, and poverty. They've just arrived in a foreign country where everyone speaks a language they don't understand. And suddenly, they're being asked to plead their case for protection against a trained government attorney who will deport them if they can't effectively tell their story. Kids need lawyers.
