Across the U.S., libraries and schools are experiencing a surge in book challenges — with nearly 16,000 bans reported since 2021. According to this new piece in The Conversation U.S., many of these titles may be targeted not for their content, but for the diversity represented on their covers. At Hoboken Public Library, we take this moment seriously. As New Jersey’s first Book Sanctuary, we are committed to protecting intellectual freedom, ensuring access to diverse voices, and upholding the role of public libraries as trusted community spaces for discovery and dialogue. We encourage you to read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eg8KpQZc — and to join us during Banned Books Week (Oct. 5–11) in reaffirming that access to knowledge and culture is a right for all.

♻️ Hoboken Public Library is launching our first-ever Repair Café this Saturday, October 4! From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., join us in the Large Programming Room at the Main Library as we bring neighbors together to rethink what we throw away. The Repair Café is part of a global sustainability movement that gives everyday items—from clothing and furniture to bikes, appliances, and jewelry—a second life. Led by our Teen Advisory Board and Girl Scout Troop 10309, and supported by the Youth Climate Action Grant of Hoboken, the program is designed to build skills, foster community, and reduce waste. 🔧 Bring one item to repair, connect with skilled volunteers, and leave with something fixed and learned. 👉 Registration is encouraged, but not required. First-come, first-served. 📍 Main Library, Large Programming Room | Saturday, October 4 | 11am – 3pm #Sustainability #Community #Hoboken #RepairCafe #CircularEconomy #Libraries https://lnkd.in/ew8P5Nh6

We were honored to be featured on Good Morning America yesterday as part of Climate Week NYC. ABC News’ Ginger Zee highlighted Hoboken Public Library’s Library of Things as an example of how libraries are helping communities reduce consumption and embrace sustainability. From tools to tech to everyday essentials, our Library of Things offers more ways for residents to borrow instead of buy, supporting both the environment and our neighbors. We are grateful to Ginger Zee and the ABC team for shining a national spotlight on this work, and to our community for continuing to show that libraries are essential hubs for innovation, sustainability, and connection. 🌍 Big news from Hoboken Public Library! We were honored to welcome ABC News Chief Meteorologist and Chief Climate Correspondent Ginger Zee and the Good Morning America team to our library during Climate Week NYC. They highlighted our Library of Things, which gives the Hoboken community the opportunity to borrow more than just books (from museum passes to beach chairs), helping reduce consumption and encourage sustainable living. We’re thrilled that our innovative services are being recognized on a national stage and hope this inspires more people to see libraries as dynamic community hubs for learning, connection, and sustainability. 📚 Learn more about our Library of Things: https://lnkd.in/e23fbr-7 #ClimateWeekNYC #LibraryOfThings #HobokenLibrary #Sustainability #GoodMorningAmerica Jennie Pu

We’re thrilled to share that four members of the Hoboken Public Library team—Director Jennie Pu, Interim Assistant Director James Cox, Information & Digital Services Manager Aimee Harris, and Chief of Staff Karla Aybar Reyes—were recently quoted in Parents Magazine. In the article, “13 Expert-Approved ‘Sneaky’ Tips to Get Your Kid Reading,” our staff offered creative, practical strategies that families can use to encourage reading at home, from using closed captions on TV, to cooking from recipes, to turning everyday activities into literacy adventures. This recognition highlights the expertise and dedication of our team to literacy, equity, and community engagement here in Hoboken. We’re proud to see our library staff included among national experts shaping conversations around childhood learning and literacy. 📖 Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eqyKE2WN

📢 We’re proud to share that Jennie Pu, Director of the Hoboken Public Library, has been named to the 2025 NJBIZ Education Power List for the 2nd year in a row! Jennie’s leadership has transformed Hoboken Public Library (the sole NJ library to make this year's list) into a nationally recognized hub of innovation, from helping to establish New Jersey’s first book sanctuary library to pioneering community-focused initiatives like the Library of Things and was instrumental in the effort to help pass the state’s Freedom to Read Act. This honor reflects not only Jennie’s commitment to access and equity, but also the power of public libraries to lead conversations on literacy, intellectual freedom, and community engagement. Join us in celebrating this recognition and the role libraries play in shaping education across New Jersey and beyond. 💡📚 #EducationPowerList #PublicLibraries #Leadership #HobokenPublicLibrary #LibraryInnovation
