All the talk lately has been about the availability of turbines and interconnection lead times for solar+ storage for DC projects, so it is great to see Digital Realty ink a 500GWh hydropower deal with Current Hydro. The hydropower is expected to come online in 2029, delivered via the PJM Interconnection and directed to Digital Realty’s Northern Virginia facilities. Current Hydro develops hydropower by leveraging “non-powered dams” and run-of-river systems, an approach aimed at minimizing new environmental impact while repurposing existing infrastructure. This agreement demonstrates Digital Realty’s focus on securing reliable, baseload renewable energy and furthering its decarbonization goals. The deal covers output from three hydroelectric projects: New Cumberland (19.99 MW, WV), Pike Island (19.99 MW, OH), and Robert C. Byrd (28.5 MW, WV), totalling ~68 MW capacity. “This partnership with Digital Realty is a major milestone for Current Hydro,” said Jeremy King, PE, MBA , CEO of Current Hydro. “Reliable, baseload renewable energy is essential to meeting the needs of our customers and achieving our climate goals,” said Aaron Binkley, vice president of Sustainability at Digital Realty. Google is backing a major $3-7 billion 10+ year HPC colocation deal between Cipher Mining and Fluidstack. 📌 Highlights: 🟢Cipher will deliver 168 MW, backed by up to 244 MW of gross capacity, at its Barber Lake site (Colorado City, Texas). 🟢Lease is set to begin October 2026. 🟢The base 10-year term is valued at approximately US$3 billion. 🟢If the two 5-year extension options are exercised, total could rise to $7 billion. 🟢 Google will backstop USD 1.4 billion of Fluidstack’s lease obligations to support project debt financing. 🟢 Google also receives warrants to purchase 5.4% of Cipher. 🟢The site has room to scale up to 500 MW total capacity and includes 587 acres of surrounding land available for development. Texas is quickly becoming the epicenter for HPC and AI infrastructure. We’re already seeing this firsthand through the teams we’re helping to build - I expect the competition to only intensify over coming years. DM me if you'd like to explore how you can gain a competitive hiring advantage in the crazy world of HPC infrastructure.

OpenAI is cranking the heat!! Five new Stargate AI powerhouses across the U.S., turbo-charging its infrastructure with Oracle and SoftBank riding shotgun. Starget will help give OpenAI access to 7GW of IT capacity over the next three years. Sites are taking shape in Shackelford County (TX), Doña Ana County (NM), Milam County (TX), Lordstown (OH), and a mystery Midwest location yet to be revealed. The Abilene, Texas flagship campus gets a boost too, with 600 megawatts of extra capacity being eyed, pushing the combined total of new + expanded sites toward 5.5 GW (just shy of the 7 GW target). OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: “AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it. That compute is the key to ensuring everyone can benefit from AI and to unlocking future breakthroughs.." Oracle is backing three of the sites, while SoftBank / SB Energy is building two. Each can be scaled up to 1.5 GW over the next 18 months. OpenAI launched Stargate in January in partnership with SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi's MGX. At the time, it claimed it would invest $500 billion in digital infrastructure over the next four years to serve OpenAI's compute needs. Are you hiring for your project team? ⚡ Big Seat. Big Growth. Big Time. ⚡ I have a unique opportunity that landed on my desk this morning.... Working with a leading contractor that has grown significantly in the Utility T&D sector in recent years. Our client wants an executive leader ready to manage $250m P&L in power infrastructure construction projects. With full self-perform capabilities, you’ll own the growth across transmission, distribution, and substation - from day one, you’ll have the autonomy to drive capture, execution, team building, and profitability. Your Southeast relationships matter at leading utilities such as Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy Corporation, Dominion Energy and American Electric Power - they want a player with connections who can deliver. In just 2–3 years, you’ll have a clear path to enterprise leadership at the top table, with significant upside in career growth and compensation. The package is negotiable, but expect to see ~$500k as the benchmark for top-tier candidates. DM me on LinkedIn or email to tom@futuraenergygroup.com

LandBridge just announced a strategic agreement with NRG Energy to power a potential 1,100 MW natural gas generation facility designed specifically to support a large-scale data center. It's exciting how coordinated this project is: ✅ Air permit applications filed ✅ Transmission interconnection requests submitted ✅ Targeted in-service date: end of 2029 (if offtake agreements line up) ✅ Power and Compute being planned and built together. The project isn’t a done deal yet but it’s exactly the kind of forward-thinking that’s going to shape where the next wave of AI and high-performance compute gets built. What do you think? With the grid already stressed, will this approach become the new normal for HPC infrastructure & Power?

OpenAI is going big with NVIDIA with a 10GW Infrastructure commitment. This agreement will unleash HPC at scale across the US. OpenAI has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with NVIDIA to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of compute infrastructure using NVIDIA systems in its data centers. As the new systems are rolled out, NVIDIA will invest up to US$100 billion in OpenAI alongside the infrastructure deployment. Timeline and platforms involved: 1) The first deployment phase is expected to come online in H2 2026. 2) The systems will use NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform OpenAI and NVIDIA will work together as preferred strategic compute and networking partners. They plan to co-optimize: - OpenAI’s model and infrastructure software - NVIDIA’s hardware and software roadmaps OpenAI is also developing its own AI chips, with mass production expected as soon as 2026, besides its own data centers, it is spending large amounts on cloud services: ~$350B across cloud providers plus an extra ~$100B for backup capacity. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, added: “Everything starts with compute. Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we’re building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.” “Nvidia and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.
