62 years ago, one book changed everything. On September 27, 1962, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, exposing the truth about pesticides like DDT. Her warning: if we didn't change course, we'd experience springs without birdsong, mornings "strangely silent where once they were filled with the beauty of bird song." Chemical companies called her "hysterical." She was accused of being a Communist. But Carson testified before Congress, demanding protection from toxic chemicals, all while battling breast cancer in private. Her impact was unstoppable. Carson's work sparked Earth Day, led to the EPA's creation, and got DDT banned in 1972. The bald eagle, once nearly extinct, became one of conservation's greatest success stories.
