Domestic violence and housing instability work hand-in-hand to disrupt the lives of so many families across the world, including more than 30% of the families Digs with Dignity has served since 2019. We have worked with so many people who bravely fled abusive partners, leaving all of their belongings behind with the hope of creating a safer future. Single parents who just want to raise their children in a loving environment. Children who left their books and toys behind. That’s why we ask questions like “What’s your favorite color?” and “What do your kids like to do?” when we first meet our DIGS families. That’s why we work to create a space that feels like home for every individual we meet. Home should be safe. Home should be peaceful. For DIGS families, home is a place where healing happens. This month and every month, all of us at Digs with Dignity are proud to support families impacted by domestic violence in our mission to break the cycle of homelessness.

Three years ago, lifelong carpenter Anthony and his daughter Jessica lost everything in a fire. They moved through several shelters while working hard to find stable housing. Despite health challenges, including an upcoming hip surgery, Anthony is focused on providing comfort and stability for Jessica. Our team worked with Headlands Technologies LLC to fill their new apartment with everything they need to finally have some peace at home after so much instability. Welcome home 🩵

We’re excited to welcome Nicole Mincu, MPH, Community Engagement Coordinator, to the DIGS team! Nicole has been a regular volunteer with DIGS since March, when she stumbled across our warehouse while looking for a different vendor. She was amazed by our work and got involved that same day! DIGS mission, sustainable initiatives, and supportive team of staff and volunteers kept her coming back each week. As Community Engagement Coordinator, she will support the operations team with warehouse projects, volunteer coordinating, and more. Fun fact about Nicole that you might not know? She speaks Romanian! Got more questions for Nicole? Chat with her when you volunteer in the warehouse and on DIGS Days!

Last week was a very happy DIGS Day for this single mom and her two boys! After a falling out with her family left this young mom of two without a home, she worked hard to find an apartment while they stayed in an area shelter. Now, with a place all their own, she just wants to provide a safe, stable home for her sons. She is focused on healing her family from instability and breaking generational cycles of struggle. With support from Refine Residential, we brought a truck full of everything she needs to feel comfortable in this space… and we were happy to bring it all in her favorite color: PINK!

This DIGS Day transformation was so special🩵 Strata joined us to support a single mom who has worked hard to get her family back together. After 3 years sleeping on trains while her teen kids stayed with her oldest daughter, Mom finally got this apartment. We were so excited to bring stability and comfort into their space, making this apartment truly feel like HOME!

“I’m gonna sleep like a BABY tonight!” We furnished this studio apartment for a man who is thrilled to start fresh at age 66. He’s celebrating 1 year clean from substances in a few months! After living in survival mode for decades, he just wanted a place to truly call home. As he walked through his fully furnished apartment for the first time, he kept saying “oh man… oh man.” He couldn’t believe the transformation! Welcome home 🩵
