About us
In a world where social connections -- so vital to the health and well-being of older adults -- are often difficult to come by, DOROT brings the generations together to form meaningful friendships through programs and services that benefit everyone. We are always looking for passionate and committed non-profit social work, program, and other professionals interested in working with older adults to join our team in a variety of positions. Based in New York City, DOROT has been a leading provider of social services to older adults for 45 years. To achieve its mission of alleviating social isolation among older adults, DOROT’s staff and trained volunteers ensure that older adults throughout Manhattan and Westchester are socially connected, engaged and aging well in their own homes. DOROT serves more than 6,200 older adults. During COVID, DOROT’s virtual programming became a source of inspiration and virtual connection for seniors throughout the U.S. Many of DOROT’s programs are fueled by volunteers – more than 6,000 of all ages are engaged annually to make in-home social visits, deliver care packages, enjoy friendly phone conversations on a weekly basis, play online chess, provide tech coaching, participate in intergenerational discussions and so much more. You can be a part of a vibrant workplace of nearly 100 professional staff of social workers, program directors and coordinators and other non-profit administrators who welcome diverse perspectives, talents and contributions. We welcome your interest in any of the positions posted on LinkedIn.

We're proud to be one of two programs featured by CBS News in its recent piece on combatting loneliness among older adults. It was wonderful to share the power of #intergenerational connections. Way to go, Elizabeth and Mabinty, two of our amazing teen interns, along with all our older adults and teens. And thank you to Andrew MacPherson of The Foundation for Social Connection for your inspired leadership. https://lnkd.in/eMxQ3SK2

This Older Americans Month, we are celebrating the older adults in our community—their contributions, their continued desire to learn and grow, their love of volunteering, and all the many ways they're active here at DOROT. In this video, see just how impactful it is for generations to connect as you hear from both older adult and teen volunteers in our intergenerational programs. Whether they are participants, volunteers, donors, or all of the above, older adults never fail to bring their wisdom, experience, and openness to all of us in the DOROT community. 💟 #OlderAmericansMonth #Intergenerational #OlderAdults

Last week, Lorraine Novack, Regional Director of DOROT Westchester, led a session on "Bridging Generational Gaps in Nonprofit Teams," at the United Way of Westchester and Putnam Nonprofit Leadership Summit. Lorraine's session explored how to have up to five generations—each with its own expectations of employment, professional values, communication styles and technology comfort levels—contribute to achieving organizational goals. We at DOROT are keenly aware of the collective strength an intergenerational community holds, and all that can be successfully accomplished. Lorraine is pictured here with Tom Gabriel, President and CEO of United Way of Westchester and Putnam. Thanks for having us! #NPSummit2025

Excellent look at #socialprescribing by the American Society on Aging.
On Aging Institute Director Raj Ahuja, JD recommended the theme of our new #GenerationsToday issue on Social Prescribing, and what a great idea that was. A tad more complicated to foster in the U.S. due to our complex healthcare system, but physicians, especially geriatricians, still practice it on the regular when they can, recommending exercise, arts classes, and social connections to older and younger adults. Today is Social Prescribing Day, making it the perfect time to explore how this practice started and where it’s headed. Remembering the Extraordinary Ted Comet Today we mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Ted Comet, a visionary leader in the Jewish community and in the last 10 years of his life, a cherished DOROT volunteer. “Ted left an indelible mark on Jewish life—as he had so many accomplishments,” said Mark L. Meridy, DOROT’s Executive Director. “And for the last 10 years, we were incredibly fortunate that even as he turned 100, this remarkable man devoted himself to serving as a DOROT volunteer.” In his collaboration with DOROT, Ted welcomed more than 1,300 people into his home on the Upper West Side—and many more on Zoom—for an experience of art, healing, and resilience. He shared the story of his wife Shoshana through a tour of five monumental tapestries that she created in her 40s as a way of coming to terms with the trauma she suffered as a Holocaust survivor. Ted was driven by a desire to share Shoshana's belief that trauma can be transmuted into creative energy. “I find that young people don’t get enough exposure to inspirational role models,” Ted once told us. “And this does that.” May Ted's memory be a blessing. "Social isolation among older adults is a bipartisan issue." Our Executive Director Mark Meridy applauds today's U.S. Senate hearing on combatting loneliness.
Social isolation among older adults is a bipartisan issue. 🏛️ The U.S. Senate showed that today when the Special Committee on Aging explored combatting loneliness and social isolation among seniors. Senator Rick Scott, committee chair, and Kirsten Gillibrand, ranking member, deserve tremendous credit for holding this hearing. In his testimony, my colleague Andrew MacPherson of The Foundation for Social Connection explained eloquently why easing social isolation among older adults is an urgent need -- and we thank him for citing DOROT's intergenerational programming, which connects teens and older adults to the benefit of both. As Andrew noted, there are solutions to this problem. Let's pursue them together now. #EndLoneliness #EndSocialIsolation #OlderAdults #OlderAmericansAct #DOROT #Intergenerational #ConnectingGenerations https://lnkd.in/eZNfue9x
