Cole Zezzo, it was great having you with us this summer. Thank you for sharing your experience!
This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with The Gateway Engineers in Pittsburgh, PA. During my time there, I worked alongside EIT’s, professional engineers, and project managers on real-world projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Being a full service Civil Engineering firm, I got to experience and work on a wide variety of tasks, a lot of which relate back to my structural focus in Architectural Engineering. • Use of the AISC Steel Manual and ASCE 7-22 to help design and size gravity systems • Review shop drawing • Perform stress and serviceability calculations • Visit job sites weekly to see how designs take shape in the field • Create structural details in CAD • Design the interior and exterior of residential properties in Revit Using the AISC Steel Manual in practice not only gave me a deeper understanding of structural design but also prepared me well for my current 4th-year steel and concrete design classes. I’m grateful to the entire team at Gateway Engineers for sharing their knowledge and giving me the chance to contribute. This experience strengthened both my technical skills and my understanding of how projects move from design to construction. Special thank you to Katie Neu, M.A. for introducing me to the team and helping with anything and everything, including providing us interns with what seemed like unlimited Chick-fil-a nuggets. 😆 Looking forward to applying what I’ve learned as I continue my journey in structural engineering!

At Gateway, we believe a healthier workspace leads to better work. We’ve filled our offices with a variety of hypoallergenic plants like Ficus trees, Orchids, Philodendrons, and Snake Plants that help clean the air, increase oxygen levels, reduce allergens, and even balance humidity. This creates a healthier, more comfortable space for our team. Additionally, studies show that being around plant life can improve mood, reduce anxiety, enhance creativity, and boost overall productivity. Looking for a workplace that invests in your well-being? The past couple of weeks brought two incredible events — the Family House Polo Match and The Montour Trail’s Tour the Montour. Gateway is proud to sponsor both, supporting traditions that bring people together. In preparation for the Polo Match, our team assisted with surveying the playing areas, helping to ensure a safe and successful event. For Tour the Montour, we volunteered alongside the Montour Trail Council, packing rider giveaway bags and organizing boxes for distribution. A special shoutout to Ryan Berner, GISP, Jason D. Jesso, PMP, and Jennie McCracken, PE, PTOE for representing Gateway on the trail as participants! #GatewayEngineers #PeopleProjectsAndPurpose #CivilEngineering #TourTheMontour #FHPolo25 #FamilyHousePittsburgh
