Intégrer pleinement la Belgique dans le réseau européen d’AI Factories et soutenir le développement d’une intelligence artificielle #éthique, alignée sur nos #valeurs #européennes, au service de l’intérêt général. Le projet d’AI Factory 🇧🇪, c’est une infrastructure : 📍 Répartie sur deux sites interconnectés, à Charleroi et à Zellik 🎓 Qui offre un accès gratuit pour les chercheurs, PME et services publics 🤝 Portée et financée conjointement par l’Europe, le fédéral et les Régions 🔧Dont l’expertise technique est rassemblée autour de @IMEC et @Cenaero Mais au-delà de l’infrastructure, l’AI Factory représente un véritable levier scientifique et stratégique : 🔬 Un outil de pointe pour entraîner des modèles d’IA, simuler des phénomènes complexes, et faire avancer la recherche dans des domaines stratégiques : #santé, #climat, #défense, #espace. 🖥️ Un supercalculateur capable de délivrer une puissance équivalente à plus d’un million d’ordinateurs personnels en parallèle, voire jusqu’à 50 millions pour certaines applications spécifiques liées à l’IA. We zijn trots om een bijdrage te leveren aan de Belgische kandidatuur voor een #AI Factory in het kader van de Europese #EuroHPC-oproep. In dit grootschalige project zal Belnet onder andere instaan voor de #netwerkinfrastructuur die de twee geplande sites in Zellik en Charleroi veilig en performant met elkaar verbindt. 🔗 Een robuuste en betrouwbare connectiviteit is de ruggengraat van elk toekomstgericht dataplatform. Via onze expertise ondersteunen we zo onderzoekers, kmo’s en publieke instellingen in hun toegang tot AI-capaciteiten van wereldniveau. Deze AI Factory is niet alleen een technologische hefboom, maar ook een strategische investering in ethische, Europese AI ten dienste van maatschappij en #wetenschap. 🚀 Proud moment at #TNC25! Today, Mike De Decker - one of the talented students selected for the GÉANT Future Talent Programme - took the stage for his Lightning Talk! 🎤👏 Mike is graduating this month from HOGENT and brought together his two passions, artificial intelligence and jump rope, in a truly original way. In his talk, he presented his bachelor thesis: an AI jump rope assistant that helps judges analyze freestyle routines more objectively. Using advanced video recognition models, his tool can: 🔹 Detect jumpers in dynamic recordings 🔹 Segment performances into individual skills 🔹 Recognize each skill based on video input And and course, what’s a Lightning Talk without a small technical hiccup? 😉 Luckily, everything got sorted, and the audience still got to enjoy a short demo of the impressive world of rope jumping. At #TNC25, our colleague Jonathan Van Overmeir took the stage during the session “Building the Quantum Future: NRENs at the Forefront” to present #BeQCI, Belgium’s contribution to the European quantum communication infrastructure (EuroQCI). In his talk, Jonathan offered a clear introduction to Quantum Key Distribution (#QKD) and compared it to the more advanced Measurement-Device-Independent QKD (MDI QKD). He explored the strengths of MDI QKD, such as its cost-efficiency and the ability to operate even with untrusted central nodes, as well as some of the current technological challenges. Other #NRENs across Europe are also actively exploring quantum communication networks. The presentation by SURF for example, focused on use cases and lessons learned from their QKD testbed deployment. As trusted digital partners, NRENs are playing a key role in enabling the secure and innovative infrastructures that the research and education community needs — today and tomorrow. #QuantumCommunication #MDIQKD #CyberSecurity #NREN #BeQCI #TNC25 #Belnet #GEANT

This Monday, I had the pleasure of representing Belnet at an engaging and interactive workshop organized by the Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (SIG-AI) of the GÉANT Association. Held in Brighton and attended by over 100 participants, the workshop was expertly chaired by Daniela Brauner and Leonie Schäfer. It offered a fantastic opportunity to explore emerging AI applications and use cases within the context of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). Key takeaways: 🤝 The importance of mutual knowledge exchange and collaboration among NRENs and the GÉANT community. 💡 The need to develop AI-based tools for networking, security, and data that are useful, sustainable, ethical, and open.
