In support of Advocate Children’s Hospital’s “Reach Out and Read” program, Chicago Cubs pitcher Jordan Wicks stopped by our Park Ridge campus to read one of his favorite children’s books to our patients. 📚 The “Reach Out and Read” program promotes early childhood literacy by partnering with primary care clinicians to integrate reading into routine pediatric visits. The program raises awareness of the positive role early literacy plays in a child’s development. Thanks for joining us, Jordan! 🫶

Doctor by day. Athlete always. Dr. Spencer Kirk doesn’t just understand endurance. He lives it. From marathons and triathlons to high-altitude climbs, his commitment to movement is constant. He is currently training for one of his biggest challenges yet: the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. When he’s not caring for patients at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Dr. Kirk is out chasing elevation, logging miles, and setting personal goals—just like the athletes he treats. As a primary care sports medicine physician, he brings that same passion into every patient interaction. “Staying active isn’t just a prescription,” he says. “It’s a lifestyle.” If you're looking to stay in motion or return to doing what you love, our expert orthopedic and sports medicine team at Advocate Health Care is here to help you move forward with strength, purpose and compassion. Happy birthday, Ida! 🎂🎈🎉 Ida, a patient at Advocate Trinity Hospital, is celebrating her 105th birthday with her favorite meal — a burger, french fries and ice cream while listening to Ella Fitzgerald. She looks forward to celebrating with her family, including her great, great grandkids when she is discharged soon. Her favorite thing to do is travel and her favorite place she has visited so far is the Pacific Ocean. Her secret to living to 105? “Just live.”

The 20th annual Cubs Charities Race to Wrigley Charity 5K offered runners the chance to allocate personal fundraising dollars to support developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Advocate Children’s Hospital. Larisa, a nurse practitioner in developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Advocate Children’s Hospital, supported her team by running the race this year. But for Larisa, supporting the developmental and behavioral pediatrics program goes beyond her career. Larisa shares the impact this program has made on her and her family: “When my son Julian was diagnosed with autism and other developmental conditions at 2.5 years old, my world shifted. Julian was first seen at Advocate Children’s Hospital, where he was given his diagnoses by clinicians, including Dr. Weedon, who I have the honor of working with now. Julian has continued to receive therapies through Advocate Children’s Hospital that have directly contributed to his growth. When he was first diagnosed, I found myself wanting to learn everything I could about how to help him. I was deeply moved by the dedication and expertise of his care team. Their impact inspired me both personally and professionally, so I went back to school to become a nurse practitioner. I had the opportunity to complete clinical hours with Dr. Weedon, and I knew right away that this is where I belong. Now, I have the unique honor of working with families like mine. I understand what it’s like to sit on the other side of the table, full of questions and fear for the future. It is truly a privilege to provide diagnoses and clinical recommendations that contribute to the patients' developmental growth, as well as to support and empower families on their own unique journeys. Today, Julian is almost 10 years old. He speaks in full sentences, including sharing his vast knowledge about his topics of interest. He is thriving in school, actively participating in therapies and extracurriculars, and enjoying his childhood with his 2 brothers. Witnessing my own children grow and interact with the world has only deepened my commitment to my 2 most important roles – mother and clinician.”

6 years after watching her premature newborn son grow strong during a 5 month stay in the NICU at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, it was Edith’s turn to heal. With a rare genetic disorder affecting kidney function – which only worsened with pregnancy – a kidney transplant was the only hope for Edith to live a full life, free from daily dialysis. “After seeing the care for my son, who was born at 26 weeks but is now completely healthy, I trusted the team at Christ,” Edith said. She soon started seeing the nephrology and kidney transplant teams at Christ and began the long wait for her new kidney. Earlier this summer, the wait was over. The team found a match and Edith returned to Christ but this time she was the patient. Her successful transplant was also a milestone for the hospital – the 300th kidney transplant. “This was not only a life-saving moment for Edith, but a milestone for our growing program,” said transplant surgeon Dr. Dan O’Brien. “It’s wonderful to see her thriving and living her life without the constraints of dialysis.” “I’m grateful for this chance to live a fuller life for myself and my children and thank the team at Christ,” she said. Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center celebrated the grand opening of its new care tower, the cornerstone of the hospital’s $645 million expansion and modernization efforts that will redefine health care delivery on Chicago’s North Side. The expansion added nearly 330,000 square feet of new construction, including fully private patient rooms, new mother/baby suites, state-of-the-art operating rooms, 2 floors of medical-surgical beds, a surgical and medical intensive care floor and expanded cardiology and outpatient cancer services. “We’re proud to mark this milestone with our community as we unveil a space designed to reflect the future of health care,” said Advocate Illinois Masonic President Matt Primack. In addition to the new tower, the hospital’s outpatient Creticos Cancer Center now provides all-encompassing cancer services, ensuring patients are supported from the beginning of their journey to well into survivorship all in one central location. The expansion also includes enhancements to cardiovascular services and the addition of a procedural floor complete with operating rooms, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and prep and recovery rooms. “As the community has grown and evolved, Advocate Illinois Masonic has followed suit to remain the community's safe space for health and healing,” said Advocate Health Care President Dia Nichols. The new tower will welcome its first patients on October 19. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4mgngGY
