  • Our NYC office recently came together for an evening of connection and community. Hosted by our CEO, Carter Barnhart, the team gathered in the office to share sushi and a round (or two) of We're Not Really Strangers—a chance to move beyond quick kitchen chats and really get to know each other. No agenda, no presentations. Just time to laugh, connect, and enjoy being together. We’re excited to bring these dinners back this fall and to keep building stronger bonds across our team. • Conversations about suicide often overlook one important reality: not all suicidal thoughts involve a plan. Passive suicidal ideation can be an early signal of serious distress. For providers, workplaces, and healthcare leaders, recognizing these signs is critical to prevention. This World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re reminded that awareness is only the first step. The real impact comes from equipping teams, clinicians, and organizations with the tools to respond and connect people to evidence-based care. At Charlie Health, we deliver high-acuity, virtual intensive outpatient treatment for individuals in crisis, with the goal of making life-saving care accessible when and where it’s needed most. #CharlieHealth #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #suicideprevention

CEO and Co-Founder at Charlie Health (We're hiring!)

Last week, The New York Times shared a heartbreaking story about a teenager who died by suicide reportedly after months of conversations with ChatGPT. His parents are now suing OpenAI, believing the technology contributed to his death. There are no words that capture the pain of losing a child this way. My heart breaks for this family, and for the many others navigating a mental health system that is already stretched far too thin. This story is devastating. But instead of putting all the blame on AI, we should be asking a different question: why did a 16-year-old turn to ChatGPT in the first place? In moments of overwhelming feelings, people look for connection. Healing happens when someone with trauma or depression is met with empathy, trust, and attunement. When those elements are missing, a response is not just inadequate, it can be harmful. And this is the harder truth: people are turning to AI because access to care is broken. More than 150 million Americans live in mental health shortage areas. High-acuity individuals face waitlists, rushed care, or no care at all. For many, AI feels like the only option because nothing else is available. So, we are not using AI to replace therapists. Instead, we are using it to expand access and support our providers in reducing burnout, giving clinicians more time with clients, personalizing care, and flagging when someone may need extra support. AI will evolve. One day it may play a larger role in direct treatment. But no matter how the technology develops, we cannot lose sight of what actually heals people: human connection. The real crisis is not AI. It is the lack of accessible, high-quality care. That is the problem we need to solve. https://lnkd.in/e8Avx8rH
