Updates

  • Over the last three years, we’ve been curating programmes, experiences and learning resources to combat the lack of funding for Black women founders in the beauty industry. Despite driving billions in consumer spending with some of the most innovative and culturally influential beauty brands, Black women founders remain underfunded, underrepresented, and over-scrutinised. To address this, we’re excited to launch BEYOND BEAUTY - a new project celebrating the Black women who are changing the face of the beauty industry. From kitchen tables to global shelves, we aim to highlight the real stories, the hustle and the heart that drive them. For many Black women, the personal cost is heavy: isolation, burnout, and the unspoken weight of carrying the expectation to succeed not just for themselves, but for their entire community. Beyond Beauty exists to honour the resilience and creativity of these women, sharing their triumphs, setbacks, and stories of perseverance. We’re eager to connect, learn and collaborate. Tag founders, investors and creators you think should be part of this project! ✨ We’re excited to expand our learning and collaborate, so feel free to say [email protected] https://lnkd.in/eFMeNkuj Source Link: https://lnkd.in/ePznYKCi #BeyondBeauty

  • Over the last few months, we've been deepening our research on the relationship young Black girls have with basketball, movement and creativity. Did you know that Basketball is the sport most Black girls identify with in the UK? Yet, despite 60% aspiring to become pro athletes, they remain one of the least active groups. The gap isn’t about interest. It’s about access. That's why this summer we’re on a mission to open up the game and create space for more girls to play and thrive. Watch this space for more info on how to get involved 🎉🚀 #BGFOffTheCourt #BlackGirlsinBasketball *Women in Sports - Black Girls and Sport: A breakup story 2025

Exciting News! Out of hundreds of applicants, I’m incredibly proud to share that JAY & CO BEAUTY has been selected for the Black Beauty Grant Programme! A powerful initiative by Nicole Krystal Crentsil, Black Girl Fest Studios, in partnership with Glossier, Inc. and communications support from CGC Global. The programme is designed to empower Black women founders in the beauty space through direct access to the Glossier team, expert industry advice, and a £10K equity-free grant. In a time when many DEI commitments are quietly fading, Glossier’s continued support for Black women founders feels especially meaningful. Their actions match their words and that makes this moment even more powerful. It’s incredibly validating to have Jay & Co Beauty recognised by one of the world’s most iconic beauty brands. A reminder that what we’re building matters and is worth investing in. I’m so excited to learn, grow, and connect with the incredible community of founders in this cohort. 💛

    Photographer & Creative Director | Forbes 30 Under 30 2025

2025 is a year of actioning things I’ve wanted to make happen for a long time and this month, I brought to life my very first Focus Forward workshop! This series of workshops reflect my mission to address the visibility gap and create real-life spaces where female photographers can connect, share knowledge, and build meaningful relationships, all while elevating their craft and expanding their networks. I created an intimate, carefully crafted space to support and empower a close-knit group of 9 talented female photographers who have already worked with reputable brands but are ready for the next step in their careers. This first workshop was titled “𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗢𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱” and covered topics from “𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼” to “𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝘁: 𝗪𝗵𝗼, 𝗛𝗼𝘄, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵.” Photographers gained valuable insight into what it takes to grow and succeed in a competitive market. The day included a roundtable discussion on representation, community building, and sharing wins; insights from key industry speakers Kevin Moore and Nicole Hathaway; networking opportunities; and personalised one-to-one portfolio reviews with leading agents and creative professionals. I want to say a huge thank you to Nicole Krystal Crentsil for partnering with me and allowing me to host the workshop at the Black Girl Fest Studios HQ, to Abigail Naomi for helping with planning, outreach, and the smooth running of the day, to Kevin Moore and Nicole Hathaway for being key speakers and reviewers, putting together a detailed presentation for attendees, and finally to our amazing reviewers Stephanie Clair, Emma Alexander, and Morag Jones for taking time out to offer their generous support and guidance. Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their energy, and made this first Focus Forward workshop so meaningful. I’m excited to keep building this community and offer more spaces where photographers can truly break through. If this resonates with you and you’d like to get involved as an attendee, key speaker or sponsor, for future sessions, please feel free to reach out to me. Please spread the word with anyone who needs to see this 🗣️ 🗓️ Applications close Friday 16th May at 11:59PM GMT 🔗 Full details and how to apply:

  • We’re incredibly excited to announce the winner of our OBAASIMA CREATIVE FUND 2025 🎉🌟🇬🇭 Meet Samuella Graham, a multi-disciplinary artist from Accra, Ghana. As a Communication Design graduate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Samo’s pixelated painting style addresses social themes, combining her painting and digital NFT skills. Samo’s work has been featured in exhibitions both locally and internationally, including Windsor Gallery in Lagos, La Residence in Abidjan, and projects contributing to the Nkyinkyim Museum in 2022. Her powerful project ‘Stained Stories’, which forms part of the larger initiative "Roses Are Red, Periods Are Not Blue", stood out for its bold and thought-provoking approach to menstrual health awareness, using art as a tool for advocacy and education. An evocative art installation and catalogue, Samo uses thrifted underwear, paintings and visual narratives to confront menstrual stigma, period poverty, and the lived experiences of bleeding bodies, particularly from a Black woman’s perspective. 🩸 We sat down with Samo to learn more about her vision for the project, inspirations and dedication to creating impact for girls. 📢 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eBKd9Qin #OBAASIMA #ObaaSimaCreativeFund
